#503 The Mega Man White Whale

This past weekend I did an unprecedented thing, I woke up early on a Saturday morning when I had a no third party obligation to do so. I woke up early to travel to the next city over’s Best Buy to finally capture my current white whale, an Amiibo of the Blue Bomber for my very own.

As I wrote during the last time I talked about Nintendo’s newest wave collectible figurines, I wanted the Mega Man Amiibo only to buy him Ironically. As it is established, Mega Man is a part of the Smash Bros character roster who is a third party Intellectual Properties. From how we have seen Nintendo’s rocky-at-best relationship with other gaming companies and how CAPCOM handle Mega Man’s future games I can almost guarantee that Mega Man will have no Amiibo support for any non-smash game during the Wii U life cycle.

In fact I bought him because of that, same reason when Duck Hunt comes out. because someone has to buy their are so few officially licensed products.

With Mega Man in my possession, I can now stop activly hunting Amiibos and constantly thinking about Amiibos at least for a while.

No more weekend Amiibo hunting trips with my younger brother going up and down every toy store in town, no more casual drive by to stores before and after work. No more searching and constantly refreshing the pages of Twitter, Reddit, and Amazon hoping to find an online store that had Mega Man in stock. I  was so close to caving in and buying from a Amazon scalper at twice the price.

Most importantly of all I can stop worrying out the terrible thought of missing my window of opportunity of securing the Amiibo I want before Nintendo stops producing him and the demand, and cost goes through the roof.  I can put all that fret and worry behind me because I have him now. Currently displayed on my makeshift Amiibo shelf, only to be taken out of his box when a New 3DS or Wii U game is released that specially support him.

#497 Nintendo’s Amiibo Distribution Rant

I finally caved this past weekend and bought my first Amiibo to add to my collection. The newest member to my collection was not Megaman, an Amiibo I am planning to buy ironically (Be MOP #493), but instead the ever wise Princess Zelda.

I have literally searched everywhere, whether online or in the physical stores everyone was sold out of the Blue Bomber, and I refuse to be scalped by third party sellers. But this only shows signs of a bigger problem that Nintendo has with the implication of their newest merchandise, the utter lack of support and communication with North American toy and gaming stores.

The Walmart in my area is one of the worst victims of this, with the worst variety of stock I have ever seen, with an abundance of Luigies, a few Zeldas and Bowsers, and one single Princess Peach to fill up the entire Amiibo display. The gamestop just down the street had almost the same amount of selection with only a few extra Samus and Pikachus but a serious lack of Amiibo Wave II and Wave III representation.

I honestly do not think that Nintendo planned for this level of hype and a culture of fans avidly customizing and hunting down Amiibos to be as big as they originally thought of when they first implemented the Amiibos. It shows with the shipping and receiving support and the overall  poor communication with the stores.

While the shortage were possibly understandable at launch,but now we are at the third wave of Amiibos, Nintendo now has some idea the demand for these figurines from each region and should modify their supply production accordingly. I should not have to have travel to three different stores, constantly checking online stock as well to find the supposedly common, non-exclusive, Amiibos, like Marth, Villager, and my personal white whale, Mega Man.

I am still mad about all that shenanigans with the exclusive Amiibos at certain retailers are in fact US exclusive, exclusive deals. The rest of the world does not have to shop at a Target or Toys R Us for a Rosalina or Lucario.

There are rumors of reproducing the more rare Amiibo statues, and confirmation of the production of Amiibo cards with just the computer chip which is a step in the right direction, but does not help the main drive I have for collecting Amiibos. While one of the reasons I buy Amiibos are for the in game unlockables, like the racing suits in Mario Kart 8 or the learning computers in Super Smash bros, the major reason I have become so excited about the ideas of Amiibos is that they are cool little figures of some of my favorite videogame characters that are not only relevantly high detailed but low barrier for entry for collecting in terms of cost and -ideal- accessibility.

Ideally I could stop by a game or toy shop and pick up some videogame character statues with pretty impressive details without having to go online or attend the expo floor of a gaming con to play through the nose for any other kind of statue of Mega Man, Pikachu, or Mario.

#493 Playing the long con with the Mega Man Amiibo

Very lately I have been feeling the recurring itch to go out and buy more of Nintendo’s Amiibo. 

I have already own five amiibos already but I want more. Despite the fact that I only have two amiibo supported games and out of the five I only got one to level 50 in Smash. 

I was doing well in to not caving into the temptation to buy more plastic dolls inposeable action figures but the third waves of amiibo figures just started arriving on the store shelves and out of all of them one is particular has caught my eye, Mega Man.

I want a Mega Man Amiibo not because I main him in Smash, like I do with Pikachu, or because he is one of my favorite videogame character. No I want the Mega Man Amiibo because he belongs to a set of Amiibos characters that will never, ever get any more Wii U/New 3DS amiibo support. 

Yes Mega Man falls into the unfortunate group of Amiibos, with Pac Man and Sonic, that are videogame characters made by other gaming companies. Looking back on Nintendo’s past history with cooperating with third party companies and the hassle it is licencing other company’s IP, it is safe to say that we will not be getting any further support of these 3rd party characters.

I have lucked out with my own Mario, Link, and D.K because I know that those few will get supported in almost every future Nintendo game. I am going to go out of my way to ensure that I have the blue bomber statue for decoration and possibly for smash if I can be bothered to do so. While you might think I am wasting money, I am instead playing the long con.

 

It is a fact that Might No 9 will be coming out soon and with the HOPEFUL success from this totally-not-mega-man Kickstarter game. My hope is that it will finally shame CAPCOM enough to force their hand and finally make a long over due Mega Man game. If CAPCOM does make a console version of a new Megaman game you can bet your bottom dollar that it will be on the Wii U and if it they will would be foolish NOT to offer Mega Man Amiibo support. Then I will have the last laugh when everyone and their mom will be scrambling to find a Mega Man Amiibo in time for the CAPCOM game’s release when all I have to do is just dust it off from my shelf.

#485 Goodbye Club Nintendo

Sad news for Nintendo fans, but Tuesday morning Nintendo made a press release announced that their six year old consumer rewards program, Club Nintendo, will be closing down by the end of this year.

The rewards program is based on the nostalgic codes included with physical copies of games which you could exchange for physical or digital goods. Nintendo has started to phase out the service, by preventing anyone for signing up for an account the day the press release went live, the last day of March (31st) will the last time Club Nintendo users to earn and redeem coins, with the closing of the entire service for North American users by June 30th.

The funny thing is, only two weekends ago I went through to my collection and redeemed my Wii U and 3DS codes to finally achieve platinum status.

It is a shame to see it close down, but not surprising factoring in the potential cost of production and shipping of some the nicer Nintendo products out there

I only started the the participate in the Nintendo rewards program at the start of 2014 and since that time I was able to redeem several very nice complimentary gifts including; the virtual copies of the first Legend of Zelda, Kid Icarus, Metroid and Super Mario Bros. for the 3DS,  the remake of  Zelda Wind Waker for the Wii U, the physical copy of Super Smash Bros soundtrack and the code for Mewtwo DLC in Super Smash.

Nintendo has stressed that with the closing of the Club Nintendo program they will be rolling out a new, updated, consumer rewards program later in the year once everything from Club Nintendo has successfully be closed down.

Hopefully with the connectivity that Nintendo’s handheld and console devices has with the internet and Nintendo servers, I hope the new rewards system is something more automatic than entering codes online through a website, maybe Nintendo can make it work with a special 3DS/Wii U New rewards system app

I also hope that with the new Nintendo Rewards program is that they keep the free digital games as a reward (which I would not expect to be dropped because digital codes are the one reward that cost nothing to the company) but on top of that I hope they improve the quality of the games in the reward sections.

The free 3DS and Wii U games given away through the Club Nintendo program has always given me the impression that it was A novelty or consolation prize for the the people who could not earn enough for the good physical items. The original titles of the Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games are nice to have as artifacts of the old times but those were the cream of a some rather uninteresting crop of games.

Nintendo I know you have some of those really good Super Nintendo and GameBoy Advance 3DS ports placed under lock and key, its time to bust them out for this new program and maybe, for the high level rewards offer some cross buy titles to boot.

#474 My Amiibo Wish

Christmas came this year and I am glad to write that the day was full of gifts, good spirits, holiday foods and of course a viewing of Lord of the Rings. Out of everything that Santa brought Amiibos versions of my brother and my main, Pikachu for me, Yoshi for one of my brother, and Kirby for my other brother.

I wrote about the Amiibo products before (Be MOP #459), and during that time o writing I was tempted to buy a one or two and I am glad I did not. Upon opening and inspecting, the figurine are quite impressive and stand alone statues, with a nice weight to it and and you could just was easily to use it just as a desk decoration but the Smash integration and customization is still the ‘system sell’ of these collectibles.

Smash my be the reason for the Amiibo’s creation, but I hope that this is the kickoff the renaissance of some of some of the other great Nintendo Intellectual Properties. Nintendo has announced that there will be an Amiibo for all the Smash characters, from Rosalina to Mega Man and Duck Hunt and more importantly Nintendo has also started making plans to integrate these Amiibos into other Nintendo games, beyond Smash.

As of right now we just have Mario Kart 8, Zelda Hyrule Warriors, and Smash as the three Wii U games that utilize the RFID feature. But these Amiibo’s still have a lot of potential for their future confirmed products, with the Open World main Zelda title, next proper Star Fox game, and the Wii U Kirby game.

Now With the commitment Nintendo has placed in creating, shipping and selling these Amiibo figures I hope this hints at a long term plan from Nintendo to bring back more of their other, non-confirmed, I.P like Metroid, F-Zero, Kid Icarus the Fire Emblem crew to the Wii U for their own games.

But more importantly I wish to see all future Amiibo supported games give full support to all 40+ characters,because while we all know that Mario, Link, and Kirby Amiibos will be used on all of the future Nintendo games, I want confirmation that in the future, if I ever buy the less popular Nintendo Amiibos characters, that I will be able to use them just as much as the Mario and Link amiibos and get just as much in-game value from it.

I understand that the third party characters (Mega Man and Pac-Man) might have some legal hassle for using their image in other Nintendo games, but that's no excuse for Nintendo's other First party characters

#459 My Swaying Stance on Buying Amiibos

This is a big day for Nintendo, for today marks the release of the long awaited Pokemon Hoenn remake, the latest installment of the Super Smash Bros series and their newest product line, Amiibos, hints the store shelves as well.

Amiibos has been the latest addition to what I am reluctant to say the newest trend in videogames market, physical collectible toys that also have an unlockable character or gameplay for a game, basically physical DLC. Skylanders were the trailblazers with this trend, Disney Infinity followed up next and now it is time for Nintendo to shine.

When I first saw Nintendo’s introduction video of Amiibos, I was against it scorned by the horror stories of the other games in the trend. Both Skylander and Disney Infinity does the terrible act of gating playable characters behind a paywall, which takes the form of toys. Say what you will about ARTS/MOBA games but at least you can earn every champion, with the option to buy the champion in question if you do want to go through the grind.

But after watching some of the newest Nintendo Direct and their plans for current and future Amiibo support, I have moved back onto the fence. The big push is with Super Smash bros, having the Amiibos act as customizable and upgradable friendly NPC fighters, in Mario Kart Amiibos unlocks special Mii racing outfits that your Miis can wear on the race tracks with the promise of Amiibos support for future games like, Hyrule Warriors, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and Mario Party 10.

Comparing SKylanders to Amiibos, Nintendo offers a better investment than Disney or Skylander because those two only works with one game, and Amiibos has the promise/potential to work with  every big Nintendo game for the rest of the Wii U life cycle. It also might hint of more of Nintendo IP crossovers like we have seen with Smash and Mario Kart 8 DLC and this would also provide some incentive for Nintendo to start producing more Wii U games of older Intellectual properties, like Metroid and F-zero for example.

Personally I am waiting for more Nintendo games to come out with full Amiibo compatibility before I buy any, making sure it is not just a One trick pony. If I do commit to a purchase I am probably going to just limit myself to buying one, and only one and stick with it for *Hopefully* all of the future Nintendo games. I probability buy my Amiibo version of my Smash main, once I finally figure out what is my new Smash main or possibly my old school favorite, Pikachu or Mario.

#458 Pokemon The Trading Card game mini-review

Nintendo is continuing the attack on my Wallet with not only the launch of Mario Kart 8 DLC pack 1 with another eshop drop. With a 3DS port of Pokemon The Trading Card game for the GameBoy color with their Virtual Console series.

I have said it before, but I do not know if it is Nintendo and Pokemon have started putting proper effort in their marketing with this console generation or if it is just because I am old enough now to start paying attention and picking up in the companies tricks.

I doubt that it was a coincidence that this Virtual Console port was announced only a few days after the Mario Kart 8 DLC went live and a week before the next major Pokemon title gets released. As of right now the only way to buy the DLC is to purchase eShop gift cards in stores or added set amounts through the online store. So naturally instead of buying the ten dollar increment gift card to just cover the price of the MK8 dlc cost, I bought the 20$ gift card for both the DLC and this game.

I knew this was going to happen eventually, with Nintendo’s habit to re-release older games for their newer platform, it was eventually going to happen that I would see, and buy a virtual console game based purely on nostalgia. I remember playing the digital version of the Pokemon trading card game on my GameBoy Color but the kicker is that I could not remember if it was any good. I remember playing it and I remember an overall net positive experience but I could not tell you if it was because of the gameplay or because it had Pokemon in it.

I have only clocked in an hour or two of game play between buying the game and writing but I feel I have experienced enough to confidently write a mini-review on the game.

Upon replaying the game the entire experience feels a tad off from the usual Pokemon games and Pokemon spin offs. This Pokemon game takes place in Generation I, with no mention of Dark, Steel, or Fairy types in the game, and the plot is almost comical. The plot has the same overall plot of the classic pokemon game, you are a nameless kid that sets out to “ be the very best//Like no one ever was” by going around and challenging the eight club masters (gym leaders) to prove your worth. But something is lost when you are trying to be the best at a card game, after the main game had you do battle with ‘real’ monsters.

Besides that complaint the only other minor one I have is that the over world runs like a poor man’s Pokemon ROM hack, using the same assets but not quite getting everything right. I have no screenshots from my game but you can see from the official eShop trailer with the camera panning and how all the enemies that you still have to challenge constantly runs in place.

Although, for a GameBoy Color game, it is still impressive that they were able to cram the entire card game rules and mechanics into the game cartridge, while still adding the cards I used to have in my physical deck when played ages ago. After all these years I still remembered how to play the card game without the introduction tutorial  and the game was overall still fun, even if I was smacked by the RNG in a few matches even when I was fighting against the gyms when I was suppose to have a type advantage.

If you have the money it is a nice buy to bind you over for the lead up of Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire’ release later this week. For now I, and I assume many other Pokemon fans, will have to settle for this fourteen year old edition of digital trading card game until Android users have the option to download and play Hearthstone, the more recent version of the Pokemon card game, or any other Pokemon games currently on the Apple app market.

#450 My Growing Concerns with Nintendo’s DLC

Lately I have been watching and rewatching the recent Nintendo Direct Super Smash Bros. 50-Fact Extravaganza reliving the bombshells and more general hype excitement facts about the new standard features of the game and why it is the next best installment to the series.

Out of all of the 50+ facts two announcements caught me off guard: the announcement of a physical copy of the 2 CD -pack of some of the music tracks from both 3DS and Wii U games and the my favorite melee fighter, Mewtwo, will be returning as DLC. Both of which will be free to everyone people who buys and register both copies of Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U the 3DS.

This announcement does answer mine and everyone else’s question about Super Smash Bros. DLC and how Nintendo will handle the potential cannibalism of Smash sales when the company decided to make Smash cross-platform.
That business move is a success because I was not planning on buying the 3DS version of Smash until now, but the question I have hovering over my head is, is the move for locking rewards behind a the people who have bought both copies as an act of evil?

Currently it is an incredible value to be had if you buy both games, as of right now you get a free Mewtwo character, two CDs of music, the ability to transfer your data from one copy of the game to another, and with the game cartridge in your 3DS you can use your handheld as an extra controller for the Wii U. But something still feels off, if you were cynical you could easily call it holding off content for those who bought the deluxe edition of the game.

This gaming generation has marked a big chapter in Nintendo’s life, with the introduction of the 3DS and Wii U we have seen the introduction of free game demos, the growth of indie games on their platform, a big push for digital distribution and the birth of their own gaming forum, the Mii-verse which I am incredibly thankful for.

With all those beneficial features we also have seen the admittance of DLC on behalf of Nintendo with later content being added in New Super Mario Wii U, Mario Kart 8, Pokemon Mystery dungeon, and now Smash. If they did not already stress that Mewtwo is still in development I would be joining everyone else in saying that this is content hiding behind a paywall, it still might be the case depending on how necessary Mewtwo will be to online and competitive world.

With Mario Kart 8 we even seen in game advertisements DLC along with the option to place a preorder on both DLC packs and receive cosmetic bonuses for Yoshi and Shyguy.

I just do not know how feel about this, for right now I am going to say the same thing about Nintendo when I last talked about their dabble with DLC:

DLC is a very fickle and corruptible force. DLC can be used for good, adding new levels and characters that would not be able to be made before the developer deadline, but it can also be a power for the selfish purposes for the sake of the company’s bottom line rather than for the consumer, like hacking off content from a full price game or filling the DLC shop page full of superfluous content or skins. It is not that I do not trust Nintendo or worst, rooting for them to fail, but making DLC in this age requires a lot of self control on behalf of the company.

To all of the people online that would say not the worry about DLC because it is Nintendo, remember that we once thought that George Lucas could do no wrong with his movies. (Be MOP #423)

Right now, for New Super Mario Wii U, Mario Kart, and even Smash, the value of the DLC is a net positive towards the side of the players, but Nintendo is walking a very thin line and if they mess up with future DLC pack they could lose a potential DLC customer for life.

#449 Kicking off Nintendo Domination Month

Yesterday I finally got around to receiving my slightly belated Birthday gift, Bayonetta 2 and because of the benevolence of Nintendo, along with the sequel I received a physical copy of the first game in the standard edition. Since I am new to the series I have spent most of my free time yesterday playing through Bayonetta 1 before I even touch the shiny new next-gen follow up game.

I have gotten to the point in the game where it introduce the ,lack for a better word, causal insta-kill scenarios into the regular part of the game

Depending on how well I take to these games I might continue the Platinum hype train with buying their earlier Wii U game, the Wonderful 101.

Besides game play Bayonetta is an interesting topic because there is so much one could talk and speculate about. I could go into an full post about how this is one of Nintendo’s first mature rated first party game since Conker’s Bad Fur Day or how it was Nintendo’s choice to allow some of their greatest female characters like Peach, Daisy, and Samus to be cosmetic costumes for Bayonetta, and even pushing the creators to make the costumes even more sexier and what it means for the future of Nintendo and their Family Friendly status that they have been building up for the past few decades.

Or I could talk about Nintendo’s choice actually advertise this game, on both Adult Swim and on the “American men’s lifestyle magazine” Playboy to advertise their Nintendo exclusive game with web advertisements and  they only way Playboy knows how, with a photo shoot with one of their models.

These are all good topics that I might return to later, once we have more evidence to suggest that this is a new trend for Nintendo, rather than magnificent lighting in a bottle event. Instead I want to shine light in the fact that Bayonetta 2 kicks off what I am calling, and what I have written about before (Be MOP #440), Nintendo Domination Month. I have been waiting for this event for a very long time because within this one month period all of my most anticipated games for 2014, most of them just so happens to be Nintendo IPs, will hit the shelves.

The arrival of Bayonetta 1 and 2 on the Wii U kicked off the season followed by the remake of one of my favorite game, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, the only PC game on this list, but from what we saw the advancement of Bayonetta, it could be on the eShop catalog one day. Then sometime in November we will be receiving the first half of Mario Kart 8 DLC, with the introduction of new characters, vehicles and new tracks.

After THAT we finally see  the Gen 3DS remake, Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire and long awaited Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U released on the same day. All of these games are coming out within four weeks and all of these games are titles I am beyond pumped to buy them all, which is great because recently I have been using my Wii U’s Amazon streaming app more than playing games on it, which is a serious sign that I needed to improve my console’s library.

I will be talking about Smash, the DLC, and my thoughts very soon.

Pardon me if for the next month or two I will be focusing mostly on Nintendo’s practice and games, this is the first time in quite a while that I have been excited for the release of any one game, let alone six of them. Heaven only knows how I will be able to juggle my free time between all these games.

#420 A Response to “Are We Becoming Too Critical Of Video Games?”

For today’s post it is another response to one of Gamemoir’s Question of the Day posts from earlier this week. The post (found right HERE) talks about the abnormal amount of cynical criticism videogame players have with recently released AAA games when it comes to user reviews on meta-critic, using the Watch_Dogs backlash as the example.

Well you know where this one post is going, I am not going to be dedicating an entire blog post to echo someone else’s opinions, when it comes to the recent game releases we as consumers should never demand less our the amount of critical comments from ourselves, in fact I think we need all the critical observations we have right now and more so to ensure that only the best gets recognized.

Many – if not all – of complaints of Watch_Dogs spawned from Ubisoft’s over-promising features on their next big new IP game and under-delivering. From the launch of Watch_dogs we saw Ubisoft made the executive decision to hack off Week One DLC, create console specific and exclusive DLC, gimp the graphics on the PC version of the game and shoehorning in an unstable DRM service…ALL while advertising Watch_Dogs as a next great next gen game.

On the flip side there is hardly any criticisms towards games that simply told you exactly what it was going do and delivered it in spades.Just compare what promises given from Nintendo when they announced their most recent Mario Wii U game to the promises and designs from Ubisoft’s Watch_Dog reveal.

That is not the say that every game ever released by anyone should be held up the gaming standard of the cream of the crop, just like movies titles can be released two different -although VERY simplified- categories;

The first one is the fun to watch but stays in the comfort zone of slight immaturity, like what we see from Kirby titles and the over the top silliness of the Deadpool game. Or continuing with the movie parallel, the Die Hard series or any major summer action blockbuster movies It is there just to satisfy that itch in our brains of seeing stuff explode and have mindless fun.

The other category is the more appealing release for both consumers and gaming developers desires, the academy award winning titles that pushes the envelope of what it means to be a part of that media, the Spec Ops: the Line, the Walking Dead seasons, or the effects caused within the gaming world with the release of coveted, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

The problem with a perceived too much criticisms of games is when a company advertise a new release claiming it to win awards and show the true powers of what it means to be a game in the advertisements and lead up and gives us a run of the mill open world game with nothing new to offer. It is like going in to see Gravity in 3D IMAX and end up watching it in one of the smallest non-3D screens, it is still the same movie but the expected experience is completely different from the what we got.

There will always be people who constantly act as the nitpickers in movies, comics, music, and games but it is important not to let their complaints of not entering every house in an open world game drown out the legit critical claims of the game and the industry.

As patrons of this of a field of arts that is still just developing, we also need to be hyper critical of executive policies that would hurt the medium on the whole, like say rehashing franchises, excessive sequels, shoehorned in product placements, and practices that are only in place to line the higher up’s wallets instead of furthering the advancement of the media as a whole.
