#437 Games from my Backlog for the month of October 2014

October is here and with that it is time to break out the freshly picked pie, Halloween decorations and start looking for a handful of new games to play for the new month. This is just another installment of my long running series where I try to get my gaming backlog under control.

For September I played through VVVVVV and The Walking Dead Season 2,

VVVVVV was the game I played on my Twitch Stream and as I wrote about it in my pixel perfect post earlier this month, it is a surprisingly open world 2D platformer that wonderfully polished the game and controls by limiting the action to using the Left and Right arrow buttons and the one action button that flips your gravitational pull. It is not much but what it did to was to scratch the itch that I have been having lately.

Closing comments: VVVVVVVV is not a game you complete, or even finish, but rather game to play up to the point where you rage quit. and then you leave the game alone for a few months.

The Walking Dead Season 2 was another wonderful game, that I played off Stream because I was afraid I could not properly comment on what was happening without ruining the atmosphere and after playing through I was glad that I did not try to live stream the story.

My favorite thing about the game’s series is the interesting depiction of the various political/idealists extremes, whether it be everyone pull their own weight of pure capitalism, the every man for themselves mentality, or the harsh dictatorship in the middle of Season 2. I also like how Season 2 focused on the theme of broken people, as these survivors lasting for so long rather than the theme of constantly searching for hope and haven in looking for Clementine’s parents.

Despite my best efforts the game still forced me to invoke an emotional response from me and even forced me into situations where it was so intense that I abandoned my morals and themes of my past decisions.

TellTale games don't think you could not add a Image comic book Easter egg with me catching it would ya?

Now that we covered last month’s game lets move on to the games that I am going to play for this month. and this month, the month that house one of my favorite holidays, I am going to do something different. Instead of playing through two set games to play in my spare time I have a few selected Halloween theme games to play on my Wednesday streams to get in the super spooky mood. I am not listing them here because I want them to be a surprise but they are some titles that I have already played and some I have not even installed yet.

The other reason I want to do this is to free up some spare time to read some of the Lovecraft stories. A few years ago I bought the complete works of HP Lovecraft and every October I try to read the all the short stories I can before the month is up, it is pretty much a tradition at this point.

**Monthly announcements**

It occurred to me that these posts would be a good place to list off some video game announcements that deserves some mentions but might not warrant an full post.

The first one announcement is that today is my 23rd birthday! And with that I have two games that will soon to be in my possession. The first one is the Wii U exclusive Bayonetta 2 from my parents and the second one is The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth from my brother.

The funny thing is my brother knows my stance on preordering games, I have talked to him about my personal policy on the matter, using this game as example, multiple times.

For a special bonus I want to leave you with a Be MOP post I wrote 2 years ago to celebrate my 21st birthday.

The second announcement I want to make is just a reminder everyone that I am going to be a 24 hour gaming live stream event on my Twitch channel this 25th on behalf of Extra Life.

this was the reward I promised you guys if I was able to reach my fundraising goal for this year we did so now I have to be true to my words.

#424 Games from my Backlog for the month of September 2014

Another month, another dollar, and another batch of games to try to tackle in my on going series ‘Games from my Backlog’ to try to trim down the amount of games I have yet to play. Before we talk about the games I will be playing this month, lets sit down and talk about the games I played last month.

Tiny Brains – I did play this one one of my Wednesday Twitch streams, and in front of the everyone watching, they saw the exact circumstances that game would need to create for me to immediately quit right out of a game. The moment was near the beginning of the game, and I was enjoying the 3D platform puzzles rotating through the four superpowered mice to overcome the room’s challenges, and I was holding my own until I got to one level where it was a waves and waves of enemy NPC, and your objective was to defeat them all before they got to the the little pink chicken NPC in the middle of the room.

I had handled previous hostile enemies NPC but what made this different and the breaking point for me was in that room the mobs were obviously designed to be Co-Op challenge, the later waves comprised of twice the enemies spawning from each end of the room. Which is a proper challenge for two or more players handling the mobs but when it was just me I was forced to juggle between two sides of the map, which was not fun.

It was the same problem I had with Borderlands 2, it was a game that seemed to be designed to be played with friends, preferred couch co-op, but the problem occurs when some players can not gather up other people to play with them when they want to play those games. It is still a good game, but I think it flourish more when I need a party game to entertain a group of people,  rather than just one player.

The Walking Dead Season 2 -This was another game I tried to play on Twitch as well but those who tuned in that day would remember that nightmare I had when my OBS program just was not willing to work with me on this game, freezing the not only the videogame feed but freezing the feed coming from my webcam.

As a result, The Walking Dead was pushed back to, “when I have some spare time to give”. But here is the thing everyone tells you, but you do not realized until you get into the real world with a full time job, there is no time for spare time anymore. Weekdays are mostly filled with work and running the odd errands and when the weekends are a sacred thing but when Saturday and Sunday comes around, there is always something for you to do.

Of course most adult gamers do not spend Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays nights crafting rough drafts for blog posts to be published Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning, then broadcast a three hour stream session later that night, and dedicate the weekends to canvassing around their town.

But the Walking Dead is one of the few games I want to get through, so in an unprecedented move I am going to bump this game into this month’s games and I have to sit down and schedule some personal gaming time to play this game.

I'm doing this because I remember how impactful and I am to try to experience that again. but I have to really be on top of my time management.

On top of that, the other games on my chopping block is VVVVVV, a good ole tough as nails 2D pixel platformer. I picked this because I have been playing some easy games lately and I need to start feeling that gaming rush from beating a incredible intense platforming stage.

I will be playing this on my stream and hopefully the gameplay will solicit some entertaining reactions from from me.

I was able to easily beat Binding of Isaac on Twitch, twice now. I need a proper challenge.

#412 Games from my Backlog Reflection

As I realized in my last blog post, my monthly “games from my backlog’ project quietly and unexpectedly reached it’s one year anniversary.

This entire project was something that was born after realizing how many games that I had in my library just collecting dust after I canceled my World of Warcraft subscription and just realizing my slight addiction to Team fortress 2 and various other time sinks(as talked about in Be MOP #360)  and this was a way to knock out some game titles that I have been meaning to play or that i gathered along the way by dedicating a each month a few games to play for my limited free game play time.

A series you can catch up with by reading all installments right now: Be MOP #258, #268, #281, #294, #307, #320, #334, #346, #359, #372, #385, #398, and #411.

Between that start of this little project I have removed about 30 games from my backlog, on top of a whole bunch of other games I played on the side.

Look how organized everything is, that habit does not reflex my organization of physical collections

Look how organized everything is, that habit does not reflex my organization of physical collections

Since, setting this up and forcing myself to games I might never have picked up by myself, I have found some favorite new titles and genres , They Bleed Pixels, Cloudberry Kingdom (and opening the floodgates to any pixel perfect and indie platformer), the Walking Dead series, Deadpool and Dust: an Elysian Tail. Basically any other game that I have dedicated a full blog post to or mentioned in future posts during or after the initial month.

Some of the games I picked were non-starters for me, like  Serious Sam 3 (motion sickness Be MOP #352) Borderlands 2 (lack of players on hand to play the game with co-op), & Gotham City Impostors, Final Fantasy VII, and the first Assassin’s Creed (lack of drive to boot up or play through the game).

Contrary to popular belief – or what this project’s mission might have been at the beginning-  its not about completing or even beating theses games it was about working through the mammoth amount of games I have trying out new games, dusting off some that I bought ages ago and just now playing, and trying new types of games after years of playing just one or two games exclusively from Highschool through College.

I am going to continue this project for the future because it is fun and pushing through and playing games I would never have thought to pick up I believe I am a better well rounded gamer because of it .

and studying for my blogging and streaming patterns it looks like I can not stop partaking in projects that has no dedicated end mark

#411 Games from my Backlog for the month of August

Good morning everyone, today’s not only the start of the weekend but the start of the  new month, and that means I go partake in the long running project of trying to curb the amount of games currently sitting on my backlog by picking a few games to dedicate my extra play time complete, or at the very least get enough of the taste of the game to see if I would enjoy that genera for future games. Last month I picked the two games, LEGO Batman 2 and Ducktales: Remastered.

I played a couple of hours into Lego Batman and it was a wonderful beat and smash em up game staring Lego version of everyone Gotham’s best and worsts characters, and the game itself got plenty of characters as well with the dialogue in the cut scenes and how they were able to add several musical scores from classic Batman and Superman themes into the game which is a very nice touch to add. But my years from World of Warcraft I have been able to quickly identify what a time/grind sink is and is the definition of grind sink, with hidden collectibles, secret objectives, and a quota of money collected by destroying destructible props on the set.

Which is not a bad thing, I think everyone should have game in their library to go to when you want to play a game but just turn off their brains for a while. I had my daily grind in World of Warcraft and currently have the goal of completing the Pokedex in X/Y. While I do like the idea of Lego games the Batman title was just not for me it was just too dark of a city to run around in but I still have Lego Lord of the Rings, Lego Marvel Super Heroes in my library and the other handful of Lego games on steam to find the perfect Lego game to spend countless hours just grinding and exploring.

Ducktales: Remastered was a game I started and finished while broadcasting it on my Twitch Stream and as I said on the stream, I was never raised on the Ducktales television show OR the game so the extra effort Disney put into to remastered edition was appreciated but I felt like I did not get the full effect compared to people who picked up this game when they played the original game on the NES. Over all though it was an enjoyable platformer although a tad limited (but it excused considering that it was on built for the original Nintendo console)  I can see how aspects of this game was the inspiration for other future games like say Shovel Knight and every other 2D indie platformers.

that Moon music though, I can see why it's so legendary.

that Moon level theme though, I can see why it’s so legendary.

With most of our summer done lets look forward to the new month with a couple of new games to play through for August, and it was not until I started writing this post for today when I realized that this month is the one year anniversary the “games from my backlog” project found way back in Be MOP #258.

One of my first three games that was on the chopping block was Tell Tale’s Walking Dead and what better way than to come full circle and play through the second season of The Walking Dead. While I have already made my arguments that games such like these maybe should not be called videogames but categorized as something else (Be MOP #259) I do want to follow up on the story of Clementine and see how the walker infested world has changed since the end of Season One.

For my second game I am choosing the indie platforming game Tiny Brains, not only because t was one of the few Indie games that was picked up by Sony for one of the games for the PlayStation 4 launch titles but because it was featured and recommended by one of my favorite YouTube celebrity  featured it on his show and recommend it to everyone.

And it is an indie platforming game with that extra third dimension which makes it stand a head of the sea of 2D platformers

#268 Games from my Backlog for the month of September

It is the beginning of a new month and you know what that means, it is time for me to pick go into my videogame backlog and find three games to focus on actually completing for the month of September. Last month I chose the Walking Dead, Dust an Elysian Tail, and Borderlands 2. While the first month of this new project was not a flawless victory I was able to complete both the Walking Dead and Dust but it was at the expense of an unexplored Pandora.

I just couldn’t get invested into playing Borderlands 2 in the single player mode. I played some co-op with my friend and that was fun but playing alone just could not same type of entertainment and I think the level of fun that was originally intended when designing the game. It seems like Borderlands 2 is destined to be grouped up with Castlecrashers and Diablo 3 and the sort, games that are best enjoyed at LANs or a gaming night with friends.

A shame too because I bought all the DLC when it was on sale.

A shame too because I bought all the DLC when it was on sale. Oh well live and learn

As sad as it is not finishing Borderlands 2 it had its time to shine and I have to move on, getting caught up by games that I had every intention to finish but no desire to was one of the major gaming roadblocks that caused my gaming backlog.

First game on the chopping block for September is the game I downloaded a while ago at the constant urging of my friend,  Black Mesa.

Black-mesa-logo

I downloaded it like he asked, just never actually played it

Black Mesa is a fan made mod that is intended to provide a shot for shot remake of the original 1998 Half Life game with the current Source Engine and ideally I want to complete this and the rest of the Half Life games by the end of the year.

To provide a counterbalance to Valve’s critically acclaimed game is something more action-packed and low brow, this next game in my sights is the recently released Deadpool game. From what I have seen from the trailers and gameplay videos it looks like a good old-fashioned crazy shooter game that keeps true to the violence and humor of the Marvel comicbook series.

I have high expectation that this game will be provide the most off the walls type of fun.

Last but certainly not least we have the Indie game Evoland to scratch the itch to play a new RPG. This one caught my eye because the major selling point was that Evoland lets the player experience the evolutionary stages the RPGs genera went through with each new generation. This one made the list solely because have a soft spot for RPG games since that was the type of games that I played the most when I was a child (read  as every Pokemon and a few Final Fantasy titles)

from the small amount of time I was playing it over the weekend, it has the same type of humor as DLC quest. Pointing out every graphical upgrade with a clever quip

I’ll see you guys Wednesday with what I thought about the beta of Blizzard’s Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.
