#476 Finally Buying Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS

Last Monday night, with some spare Christmas cash I caved in and bought Super Smash Bros for the 3DS, on the way to home from work.

This is the wonderful time, for me, where all the extra holiday cash from work and family comes in after Christmas where I go out and buy all the gives I wanted to buy for me.

This is the wonderful time, for me, where all the extra holiday cash from work and family comes in after Christmas where I go out and buy all the gives I wanted to buy for me.

Like before, I have talked about the idea of buying 3DS Smash before (Be MOP #450), knowing that for a fact that I was going to buy the Wii U edition on day one but even with the ability to use the 3DS device as a spare controller for the console game I was still hesitant on buying the same game twice, and at full price no less.

I was still on the fence on buying it this past weekend, until I was talking to my younger brother about my dilemma and he asked me two very simple questions.

Is the game good enough to buy the game again on another platform? The answer is yes. After playing through Smash on the Wii U I can say that it is one of the only two recently released games I would buy again if it meant getting another copy of the game, that and Binding of Isaac Rebirth are the only two games to hold that honor.

BoI:Re for the 3DS WHEN!?

BoI:Re for the 3DS WHEN!?

The other major question was, “Is this going to be one of the major games to bring to PAX and to an extend all future gaming conventions?” The answer was also another yes.

From my observations it has seem that the past few year it has seem that the Nintendo 3DS has secured it spot as THE gaming device to bring to any gaming event. With the StreetPass incentive to push you to bring your device out into the public, but their games like Pokemon and the built in Street Pass games were the perfect ways to pass the time in the long lines I predict Smash will be the same type of game where you can turn to anyone in a line for panel and play a few rounds just to kill time and make a friend or two along the way.

I would not be buying it now if it was not for a PHYSICAL copy of the game's soundtrack. it's like Nintendo knows just how to push the buttons of our wallets.

I would not be buying it now if it was not for a PHYSICAL copy of the game’s soundtrack. it’s like Nintendo knows just how to push the buttons of our wallets.

As I mentioned at the beginning that I did ending up buying the game for the handheld, within the few days of playing the game, and to a surprise to no one, I have surprisingly enjoying the game. Going in I knew the fact that the game would be a full port of the console game but I did not realize what that meant until I saw that it was the full Wii U game with the same controls, all the items, and the full character roster with locked 60 fps, all crammed into such a tiny game cartage

Now I can get good on the go!

Now I can get good on the go!

Funny enough it was the same two questions that forced the same brother I was talking to go out and buy a 3DS, Smash, and the latest Pokemon,  for the exact same reasons, because he loved the game and because he knows that this will be the game everyone will be playing in their spare time at PAX.

#475 My 2015 Wishlist

We are at the very last week of 2014, as as many look back on the past year (just like what I did earlier this month in Be MOP #471), I would like to take this time to focus on the next year, 2015. While we are all ringing in the new year I want to go through my wishlist for the upcoming year with all of you guys. Consider this a mix of new years resolution and my wishlist for the gaming world. so in no particular order:

I have only one New Year's resolution since 2012, to update this site every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 52 weeks

I have only one New Year’s resolution since 2012, to update this site every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 52 weeks

A new self-built gaming PC.

I have a fairly competent gaming Laptop, which has served me well for a few years but the old girl is starting to show her age and have a feeling that she is going to be soon on her way out of the magnificent world. Before that hapens and catches me off guard I want to preventively replace her.  But I do not want to out out and just buy a new computer, I want to build it myself. This is a project I want to get started for a while and hopefully with Tax season just around the corner I will be able to cash in my rebate for the funding foundation of my next, great gaming computer.

I am also pursuing this project for two reason; I want 1080p/60fps for every game I own all the time, something my current computer can not do and I want a computer that can stream games with a tolerable frame rate on any setting above ‘Lowest’

Fun fact: From this year's Steam sales I have a list of games that to only be played on a better computer, playing a Platinum game on anything less than High graphics and constant frame rates.

More Amiibo supported games

I have talked about this last time (Be MOP #474) but I am adding it here again after training my Star Fox Amiibo figure in Smash and soon realizing that the only other game I have that is supported by Amiibos is Mario Kart 8.

I put this here again because after everything I have heard about the Nightmares of the Amiibos production and shipping line, and the multiple exclusive Amiibo deals Nintendo has with various videogames and toy stores I worry that we will not get constant, across the board support for all these little guys in future Nintendo games.

Exclusively available at Toys R US!

To have more fun at PAX East than last year.

This is one of the only major Gaming convention on the East Coast and because of that I am trying to push myself to have the most jammed packed gaming weekend each year, with goals of filling up my schedule with educational/intellectual panels, making at least one pass around every booth on the expo floor, and meeting up with online friends who are also attending.

In the lead up to each new PAX I have an ongoing challenge to try to have more fun at this year’s PAX East than last time. It started with me moving from two days pass to three days. The next year it got one upped when I turned 21 when I could start attending in all the various PAX parties around the city during the weekend and which is then one upped last year when I booked a hotel for last year instead of just hopping a bus back home at the end of each day. My goal for this year is to be even more efficient in all the festivities than last year.

The last few PAX East I was inspired to start a blog and then later Twitch account, so who knows what might come next.

No more Buggy AAA games.

This is the equivalent of “No more wars” on this list, but it seemed like constant, defining part of the 2014’s gaming world. Luckily enough to dodge a bullet on this terrible problem, but I know that the trend of pumping out half baked and incomplete games hurts everyone. It hurts the game’s community, it hurts the trust with the consumers, it hurts the image of the gaming companies that decided to push out a game without a proper test drive through the QA department, and it hurts the gaming world as a whole.

And I hope that the game developers and companies learn their lesson from this past year and make an effort to change their business practice for the better.

Its a on wish list for a reason

Its a on the 2015 wishlist for a reason

#474 My Amiibo Wish

Christmas came this year and I am glad to write that the day was full of gifts, good spirits, holiday foods and of course a viewing of Lord of the Rings. Out of everything that Santa brought Amiibos versions of my brother and my main, Pikachu for me, Yoshi for one of my brother, and Kirby for my other brother.

Jump > Down+ B for days

Jump > Down+ B for days

I wrote about the Amiibo products before (Be MOP #459), and during that time o writing I was tempted to buy a one or two and I am glad I did not. Upon opening and inspecting, the figurine are quite impressive and stand alone statues, with a nice weight to it and and you could just was easily to use it just as a desk decoration but the Smash integration and customization is still the ‘system sell’ of these collectibles.

Smash my be the reason for the Amiibo’s creation, but I hope that this is the kickoff the renaissance of some of some of the other great Nintendo Intellectual Properties. Nintendo has announced that there will be an Amiibo for all the Smash characters, from Rosalina to Mega Man and Duck Hunt and more importantly Nintendo has also started making plans to integrate these Amiibos into other Nintendo games, beyond Smash.

As of right now we just have Mario Kart 8, Zelda Hyrule Warriors, and Smash as the three Wii U games that utilize the RFID feature. But these Amiibo’s still have a lot of potential for their future confirmed products, with the Open World main Zelda title, next proper Star Fox game, and the Wii U Kirby game.

Want.

Want.

Now With the commitment Nintendo has placed in creating, shipping and selling these Amiibo figures I hope this hints at a long term plan from Nintendo to bring back more of their other, non-confirmed, I.P like Metroid, F-Zero, Kid Icarus the Fire Emblem crew to the Wii U for their own games.

But more importantly I wish to see all future Amiibo supported games give full support to all 40+ characters, because while we all know that Mario, Link, and Kirby Amiibos will be used on all of the future Nintendo games, I want confirmation that in the future, if I ever buy the less popular Nintendo Amiibos characters, that I will be able to use them just as much as the Mario and Link amiibos and get just as much in-game value from it.

I understand that the third party characters (Mega Man and Pac-Man) might have some legal hassle for using their image in other Nintendo games, but that's no excuse for Nintendo's other First party characters

#472 Where are you Steam Sales?

As predicted, the yearly Steam Winter sales has hit the servers and as the norm most of the PC games in Valve’s store catalog went on sale at incredible prices.

I am a tad sad that not ALL of the games on my list are discounted

I am a tad sad that not ALL of the games on my list are discounted

As of writing, we are four days into the two week extravaganza and not to sound disingenuous because I appreciate what GabeN and the rest of the Steam Team has done to get all these game developers to discount these games a such steep prices all at the same time. But I feel like, for me, the magic from the sales are gone, the anticipation I felt when I refresh the store page at exactly 1pm is no longer there.

I do not know why, I have bought a few games titles this past week but something is missing, I am not going as crazy with the sales as I previously remembered . I am trying to remember the past sales with non-rose colored glasses, but I do remember that I had felt some suspense with each new day.

I might be feeling this way because I have already gone through this song and dance a few times before. For example I already bought most of the games featured in the Featured Deals as I looked through the Daily Deals, Flash Sales, and community voted sales the “In library” tag attached to most of list

And the few other games that I want to buy have "early access" tags on them, and I have a personal policy against buys games that are not completed yet.

And the few other games that I want to buy have “early access” tags on them, and I have a personal policy against buys games that are not completed yet.

I already have all the “Staple Steam” games, I have Portal 1 and 2, The Half Life series, Super Meat Boy, all the other must haves and all the best games of my favorite genera currently tied to my Steam account, so I see them again on sale this time around I just view that game as a blank space. It is the inevitable result of going through and buying all the games that looked interesting to me the last time around and currently there are recent AAA games that I have interested in buying now, Aliens Isolation and Skyrim might look like a nice stocking stuffers for some gamers but I only gave them a passing glance because I know I would not enjoy playing them.

I have a creeping suspicion that the slightly lackluster emotions I have for this year’s Winter Sales is because I have experience so many of these steam sales that I started this Winter Sales event as a veteran, with experienced gamer eyes (Be MOP #436). It is probability the same reason why Christmas as an adult is not as exciting compared to the Christmases you experienced as a child.

I want to know if I am alone in this way of thinking, are there other games out there that feel the same way about this year’s of steam sales. If so leave a comment down below and with your comment please include how long you have been in Steam and how many Steam Sales you have went through.

#471 Three Years

Today is a day for celebration, because today is the three year anniversary marking the event when I created this Be MOP blog and published it’s first post on WordPress. As I said in last year’s post (Be MOP #315), this blog was created after my Junior college midterms after I experienced a very early quarter life crisis.

What is impressive is that in my three years of blogging I still have the bragging rights of not missed any of my Monday, Wednesday, Friday blog post deadlines. Three years of trying to balance college midterms, finals, graduations, dealing with the transition away from college life, and all of the random inconveniences that popped up along the way I was still here, updating my blog on the same schedule I created for myself since Day One.

Be MOP Banner

Since my last 2013 anniversary post and now, what now has changed with me and this blog?

At the start of the year I received a 3DS handheld system with a copy of Pokemon Y for Christmas (Be MOP #318) with lead to influx of various Pokemon and Mario posts appearing on this blog. Later in the year I went out and bought a Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle (Be MOP #391) and went full Nintendo Fan Boy with this blog by writing about almost nothing but Nintendo from October to December.

But how can you blame me? All of those Nintendo exclusive games were fun from beginning to end and it was a refreshing change of pace from almost anything else I played through on my PC. Nintendo was something I did not know I needed until I got it, now it has been a staple of my weekly free gaming time.

It is amazing that the Wii U, the weakest console this gen, has been able to pump out the most amazing games from this year with having Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, and Smash run at either 720p or 1080p while having the frame rate be locked at 60fps. I have a theory that the people at Nintendo code their games on magic.

This year I also celebrated my one year of unsubscribing from Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, an impressive feat. As I wrote in my post blog when I talked more in-depth about the year from the MMO (Be MOP #408), but enough things have gotten inbetween me and WoW the resubscribing would be a waste of money.

and no amount of emails will persuade me to go back, Blizzard

and no amount of emails will persuade me to go back, Blizzard

But out of everything,my most impressive development this year was development of my own Twitch Channel, branching out the Be MOP name from beyond text to video. Since late April, when I was announcing my plans to do start Live Streaming Infinite Crisis and other videogames (Be MOP #370). I have participated in my first 24 hour stream for Extra Life charity event, helping raise $290 dollars to benefit Boston Children’s Hospital. I have also recently reached my 100th day of streaming (Be MOP #454) and shortly after that I hit 100+ followers on my Twitch Channel.

Since my debut as a streamer and now, I have; accepted into Turbine’s Infinite Crisis Twitch Partnership program, joined the Infinite Crisis Community Stream Team, and have even been invited to stream on the official Infinite Crisis Twitch Channel every week as a Community Streamer.

And I got cool Infinite Crisis skins to give out all this weekend.

Fun Fact: Because of the old Streaming schedule (M/W/F 11:30- 2:30am and Sat 11-2a) There was a time when I was technically streaming seven days a week

I wonder how long I have to be on Twitch before I can confidently add “Twitch Streamer” to my LinkedIn profile?

Just like my previous yearly posts,

To make this go full circle here’s a the link to my first post on this blog. Enjoy and I’ll see you back here Monday.”

#470 Dusting off my Steam Wishlist for the Harsh Winter Sales

A little birdy told the internet that the 2014 Steam Winter Sales will be starting this Thursday, and that means that soon all the good little boys and girls around the world will open their Steam clients at 1pm EST to find all of their favorite games on sale at ridiculous prices for the next few weeks. With that I need to brush off my steam wishlist to start my pre-steam sale celebration.

For a while now I have been using my wishlist as a quick cheat sheet of the interested games use it to easily check if the game is on a daily or flash sale. Since I first heard the news that the Great Winter Sales would be upon us soon, I have went through the Steam Catalog and started added games that will hopefully go on sales during this year’s winter sales.

This chart: know it. love it

This chart: know it. love it

I still have Fallout 3 on the wishlist and Deadrising 2 from my missed opportunity from the last -few- seasonal sales, along with a few Indie platformers like, Electronic Super Joy and Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures.

Recently I have added OVERKILL’s PAYDAY 2,and Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People from TellTale. Strong Bad’s game is on my wishlist because I have been wanting to stroll down pre-YouTube internet memory lane for quite a while now and HomeStar Runner’s cast of character will hhopefullybe the means to scratching that itch

I have also added METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE and The Legend of Korra to my wishlist because after playing through both Bayonetta games I have officially hopped on the Platinum * Games hype train. Even though I am not never played any Metal Gear game or watched the Avatar cartoon series beyond Book One I have complete faith in Platinum’s ability to draw me into the game and ramp up the excitement with each passing Boss fight.

Between those P* games and Wonderful 101, a game that will be waiting for me under the Christmas tree for me, I will be all set with action-fighting games for a while.

Between those P* games and Wonderful 101, a game that will be waiting for me under the Christmas tree for me, I will be all set with action-fighting games for a long while.

Between that I have also been using the new Steam Curator feature for suggestions and added the indie games like 1001 Spikes and Divekick, two games I have seen given much praise from the Curators, various Youtube stars and news outlets.

But I am also curious on what games you are waiting to waiting guy to buy from the Steam Winter Sale, leave a comment down below on the titles you hope to pick up and play during this Winter Season. I am interested in seeing what you all are waiting to buy.
