If you been causally following me on Twitter, Twitch, or this blog you would know that I have been playing my fair share of Infinite Crisis. While I was playing it one comment that I constantly went back to every time I launched the game client, that DC Comics are currently sitting on the ability to print money with Infinite Crisis by way of Microtransactions. Currently Infinite Crisis’s major competitor, League of Legends on top of being the biggest ARTS game on the market, has a bunch of what I call, ‘Totally Not’s going for it. Riot games currently have Totally Not Wonder Woman, Totally Not Poison Ivy, Big Daddy and Cookie Monster.
One of Infinite Crisis’s draw is that they have the licence of all the DC Comics characters to work with, They currently have the real Wonder Woman, Poison Ivy,the rest of the gang while have the potential to add any of the heroes or villains from DC’s studios. as their selling point for the initial incentive to get the comic book geeks of the gaming population to defect from their preferred A.R.T.S/MOBA game and download this game.
On top of the totally real heroes and villains in Infinite Crisis has the ability to make home hitting skins for profit. The art department could bring back one-off costumes from fan favorite comic book events, like the Batman and Superman costumes from the Superman: Red Son series, Parallax Hal Jordan from Emerald Twilight, or the Blue Lantern Flash from Blackest Night. Lest we forget the abundance of materials from the cartoons and movies. The Infinite Crisis art department could take a month off and instead of making any new, original, skins they could just re-release the 1990’s DC Animated Universe skins for all the champions and skill rake in the money.
It I was in charge of the DC.IC project I would double the art department, then split it in half. Make one side make the original and funny skins for the existing champions, like First Date Doomsday and Slumber Party Harley Quinn. While the first team is creating those unique skins I would give the other half of the art department the entire 75 years of DC history and have them make nothing but comic book homages from the greatest moments in the DCU.
It drives me bats that they are sitting on this potential gold mine and they are not just pumping out these skins with every other update. Although on second thought Infinite Crisis probably do not go that route and are showing some self-restraint so they do not give the impression to the gaming crowd that this is game created just to make the most money from microtransactions and special additional gaming purchases.
