#7 What do the Old Gods want with Pandaria?

Hello everyone, hope you had a wonderful New Year Eve plenty of festivities and merriment I trust? I spent New Years with my family, ordering Chinese food and watching a marathon of the Big Bang Theory (one of the best New Year’s Eve parties I ever had) Well enough with the small talk lets get down to brass tacks

Always a painful expression

As last year’s BlizzCon, Blizzard announced Mist of Pandaria  with the idea that this expansion will not have a main villain that both factions would have to worry about as they try to rage war on each other. MoP will be promising the player more of a focus on each other, as the only two forces trying to claim the land and the resources available. But what what most people seem to forget about the other, more subtle, force that might be interested in getting their hands, or in this case, tentacles on the wonders of Pandaria.

With that last sentence you might have guess that the force that I’m talking about are none other than the Old Gods. For those who do not know the Old Gods are beings that are just as old as the Titans. They are beings of chaos that just want to destroy for the sake of destruction, and if you ever seen their servants or their beings, then you can figure out they borrow heavily on the 1930’s Lovecraft novels, but back to WoW.

In Thrall: Twilight of the Aspect, there is something that Nozdormu said something that stuck me. Nozdormu conformed that almost every evil force that threatened the people of Azeroth was because of the work of the Old Gods. The insanity of Deathwing, the attack from the Temple of Ahn’Qiraj, Arthus’ rise to the Lich King  and the Nightmare that is plaguing the Emerald Dream  were all because of a very long and complex plan by the Old Gods to defeat the Aspects and escape to the surface.

There is no doubt that as we set sail to the newly discovered island that sooner or later we will be encountering the work of the Old God, trying to set up a plan to ensure the destruction of the protectors of Azeroth. But the question is, what could it be? and how could it be connected to Pandaria?

After thinking about how Blizzard could implement the insanity of  C’thun and Yogg-Saron (and  countless other unnamed ones) into the new continent, I have whittled the answer to four possibilities

*Disclaimers* These ideas could be rendered moot if Blizzard decide to have the Old God’s next attack to take place on Kalimdor, Eastern Kingdoms, or Northrend. Even though I doubt that possible out come would be true, Blizzard wouldn’t drag us away from the most recent areas to go back to the previous expansion areas AGAIN.

A valuable resource

So my first thought that the Old Gods want Pandaria is  for a new resource from the island that is exclusive to that part of the world. And that would be needed to cause a fatal blow to the world, but this idea works a lot better with my next two theories.

A mighty Pandarian weapon

Another theory is that some where on the island is an über powerful weapon that the Old Gods want to slay the planet’s inhabitants. This may be unused, since that was a plot device in Uldum. In the Halls of Origination instance the whole purpose was for the adventures to enter the pyramid and defeat the guardians was to shut down the Titan machine that would make wipe out the entire population of Azeroth, trying to rebuild civilization from scratch again.

A way out.

One of the reasons the Old Gods are such a persistent threat is because they have been trying to break out of the planet that are holding them prisoners and since Pandaria, a chunk of land that have been untouched by any outside force since before the sundering (thousands upon thousands of years ago) there might be a Titan-built loophole that the old gods might exploit  to escape from their prisons and wreck havoc on the surface, and across the stars. It could be an old temple that would have been forgotten to history if Pandaria experienced the sundering like the rest of the world.

Or because it is just another thing to corrupt.

The last possibility (that I can think of) that would explain why the Old Gods have an interest in Pandaria is simply because it exist. The Old Gods -just like Lovecraft’s inspiration- just want to destroy anything beautiful and replace it with their own twisted vision of what the world should be like.  The Old Gods might just want to destroy pandaria simply because it exist, and it would be another thing they would have power over, just like the logic your little siblings used.

So those are my possible theories on how Blizzard would implement the Old Gods into the new expansion, and if there is any recent developments on the Old God’s story line you can find it….on some other WoW news site, BUT you can find my reaction and thoughts on Be MOP.

Be MOP focuses on the lead up to the next World of Warcraft expansion with my own reflections about the last dying moments of the Catalysm’s Twilight Hour as we look into the Mist of the new day. Updates Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
